About Us
Our Mission
The Wimberley Valley Habitat for Humanity was established in 1992 as a locally run affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing organization. Habitat for Humanity works in partnership with people in need to build decent, affordable housing. This is accomplished through various partnerships with volunteer workers, generous donors, prayer partners, and the homeowner/partners who are required to work building their house. The houses are sold to those in need at no profit and with no interest charge.
How does Habitat work?
Volunteers provide most of the labor, and individual and corporate donors provide money and materials to build Habitat houses. Partner families themselves invest hundreds of hours of labor — “sweat equity” — into building their homes and the homes of others. Their mortgage payments go into a revolving Fund for Humanity that is used to build more houses.
Does the Fund for Humanity provide all of Habitat’s needs?
No. Given the fairly limited number of houses we have built to-date, additional funds are needed to continue construction of new Habitat homes. Donations and special fund raising projects are needed to generate construction funds, and land donated at low or no cost to Habitat are essential to help us continue our building efforts. And the Village Store is a major source of construction funds, providing over half of the resources needed in recent builds.
What does a Wimberley Valley Habitat house look like?
The following picture is representative of the ten houses we have built since our incorporation. Our houses are built within the deed restrictions of the neighborhoods where we build, and the homeowners are advised by our Family Support Committee how to be good homeowners and good neighbors. Some of our local businesses have even volunteered time and materials to improve landscaping aspects of the home.
