Thank you for your interest in applying for a Habitat for Humanity Home. This website contains a form which is a prequalification questionnaire. If it is determined that you might qualify for a Habitat For Humanity home, we will guide you through the application process. At that time you will be asked to provide additional information as well as documentation for all information given in the preliminary questionnaire. In order to qualify for a Wimberley Valley Habitat for Humanity home, you must be able to meet and document the qualifications set forth in the pre-qualification questionnaire form -- you can find it at the Village Store or download it from our Home Page (click on Pre-qualification Questionnaire in the Documents box).

The Wimberley Valley Habitat for Humanity Selection Process

The WVHH Family Selection Committee, which includes members of the Wimberley Valley Habitat for Humanity Board of Directors and members from the community at large, prepares the application packets which are made available prior to each build at the Village Thrift Store on River Road. The standard application form, available in both English and Spanish, is an ‘easy to use’ document. It is designed to provide a simple paper process for our applicants, as well as a simple review process for the Committee.

To qualify for a Habitat home in Wimberley, the candidate(s) must be in need of decent, affordable housing. The candidate(s) must have the ability to repay the cost of the no-interest (normally 25 year) mortgage; and contribute 300 sweat equity hours in partnering to build their home. Candidates must live within the 78676 zip code and/or the Wimberley Independent School District presently and for at least six (6) months prior to the time of the application, and have a record of stable income or employment. The candidate must be a U.S. citizen or demonstrate permanent resident status with a green card. Most importantly, to become a candidate, interested persons must fill out the application, and that just may change their life.

The Family Selection Committee members dedicate their time and hearts to selecting the one family which it determines best qualifies for a Habitat house. The family selection process takes approximately six months, beginning with the preparation of the application documents and preparing and posting publicity to seek out applicants. The Committee meets several times, including offering an Orientation Meeting for interested applicants to attend for information to be shared about the family selection process. Application packets are also available at this meeting, and questions answered. A Workshop is offered for interested applicants, where committee members are available to give assistance in getting application forms filled out. An announcement of dates for the Orientation Meeting, Workshop, and deadline for having application packets returned and/or postmarked is made in our local newspaper, The Wimberley View.

The Family Selection Committee has a busy period as it moves through the scheduled process which leads us to the time for evaluating the applications for completeness and determining qualified applicants. Qualified applicants are then scheduled for a home visit by a pair of committee members and present housing is evaluated. Following the home visits, the Committee meets to discuss the evaluations and narrow the selection until those most in need are agreed upon. Required credit reports are ordered and evaluated by the Committee. Finally, the final selection can be made, and the applicants are notified accordingly by the WVHH Board of Directors.
